I love visiting grocery stores in foreign countries. While those Betty Crocker cakes look familiar, I've never seen pineapple or orange flavors in my grocery aisles. Such fun to see things that are the same, yet different. Hope it's a great adventure.


My Indian pal says the veg are karela - bitter melon.

The veggies are the Indian species of bitter melon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_melon. I'm more familiar with the Chinese variety which is less bumpy than those in the pic. Whenever I'm in another country, I like to visit grocery stores & farmers' markets to see what types of foods are important to the local people.

Hey just adding the recipe for you.

Recipe of Punjabi Stuffed Karela Fry:

Ingredient Name & Quantity:-
Dry Mango Power: 1 Tbsp
Bengal Gram flour (Optional i.e. Punjabi recipe doesn't require while Rajasthani style requires): 1 Tbsp
Bitter Gourd/Melon: 8
Chili Powder: 1/4 Tbsp
Coriander Power: 4 Tbsp
Cumin Seeds: 1 Tbsp
Fennel (optional): 1 Pinch
Ginger Garlic Paste: 1 Tbsp
Mustard oil (Tastes best in it, you may use olive oil): 2 Tbsp
Onions: 1 finely chopped
Salt: To Taste
Sugar or Jaggery (Optional): Very little to taste
Turmeric: 1/3 tbsp

Directions to Make:
1. Peel outer hard surface of gourds & slit them from one side. Remove seeds and chop the seeds to half of their size.

2. Add oil in a pan, if using Mustard oil then heat it on a slow flame till it turns from initial Yellow color to almost transparent color. Add cumin, add turmeric, add onions and fry till golden brown.

Add bengal gram flour & cook till nice flavor of roasted bengal gram.

3. Add ginger garlic paste and add chilli pdr and add chopped bitter melon seeds. Cook till nicely roasted

Now, add dry Mango powder, coriander powder, salt and saute in slow flame. Add very little sugar or jaggery.

4. Stuff the bitter melon with the cooked mixture.

Tie the Karela with a sewing thread so the mixture is intact inside while cooking (Optional).

Add mustard oil, shallow fry in medium heat changing the sides till well cooked and crispy.
