It's only for the week this go-round and acting as the bad guys during another group's training exercises feels something like being a tethered goat waiting for the slaughter. But, it's at sea and we're shaking off the rust that has accumulated in the last month. It's hard to believe that it's been a full month since we got back!
Yesterday was painfully dull, but today's highlights included:
Leap frogs with USS LAKE ERIE. You may remember her as the ship that shot down a satellite a few years ago. You may not know that DECATUR was the back-up for that shot. It was some good fun. Leap frogs are just what they sound like: two ships start in a line, the rear ship hauls out to one side and passes the lead ship at 200 feet and then settles out in the lead. Repeat until everyone has had a chance to go or it's so cold that nobody can feel their faces any more. Coastal Southern California is NOT a warm place.
The highlight of my day was this though - a conversation over the bridge-to-bridge radio with one of my very best friends. He was talking from the cockpit of his F/A-18 while I was on the bridge of my ship. My job ROCKS!
It must be so good to blow away the cobwebs !
Some people go for years and don't feel "alive"
How cool that you could have a good chat while both working hard.
