So here I am.
For four-ish months until I take command. I'm okay with the wait - it's been six years, nearly seven since I left the Cruiser-Destroyer world and a lot has changed. This gives me a chance to figure out the changes with someone around on a daily basis to talk things over with.
Today was my first full day. The ship is clean and operational, the crew is cheerful and mission-oriented and I don't think anywhere else would be as good a place for me. I do have some work cut out for me, but it's the kind I like - polish and guidance rather than needing to stomp around and give folks hell every time I turn around. On the small victory side, I picked up bits of trash as I walked around (we have a lot of outside workers onboard right now and they don't always care as much...and sometimes our young impressionable Sailors take their cues from the wrong folks,) at first the people showing me their spaces walked past things that I then picked up as I passed by. By the third stop, they were picking up the bits and pieces of trash. This is a good thing.
Yes - I'll never forget that lesson. I watched as a general picked up trash that I hadn't bothered to see. That only happened once.

All of the best CEOs do this, in my experience.

Teaching by example is always the best way. A lot less stressful (for everyone) than stomping around giving hell. Good job!
